Do You Have the Vision Strand?
Leaders have certain strands programmed into them. Are leaders completely different from everyone else? There are scientific facts that state not....but at the same time, they really are. DNA is what makes each of us unique. Leaders have unique strands that help make up their DNA – creating a unique individual with a unique approach to leadership and life. Each strand in Leadership DNA addresses a specific trait that can be enhanced or developed while on your leadership journey.
One strand of DNA that needs constant focus is the leader’s vision. Vision is that creative time – that place where the leader can dream and see what solutions the organization provides for the world. Once the organization is a solution, the vision can become clear.
Communicating the Vision
Keep the statement simple. Simple and repeated often will definitely be remembered. Providing real life examples of living the vision is an impressive way to communicate the vision and allow the team to see how they can follow suit.
It can be as simple as telling a story. The leader needs to ensure that they can engage the hearts and minds of their audience – so passion and emotion and personal interaction with the vision is critical to successful communication.
When Does Vision Stick?
Well, hard to say. For some, it may stick immediately. For the leader that is certainly true because they came up with it. For the rest there may be times to remind and re-iterate the vision with different examples or spin, to ensure that the frequent reminders help with the ‘sticking’.
Vision can get lost in success and growth, through complications of the business and even in failure, where it may be easier to not see the vision because life is getting in the way. This is when it is critical for the leader to step up and re-focus the team on the vision.
Learning about vision is critical to success. Take a few moments and write out what you would like your organization to look like in 10 years in the form of a newspaper article that explains the journey to getting there. It will be eye opening. This exercise will help you understand the importance of communicating the vision and making it stick.
